“Live @ the Freight,” was recorded at the last show of Cry Cry Cry's sold out 20-year reunion tour in 2018.

* * *
"CryCryCry's final two shows took place on April 15, 2018 at the well-beloved and legendary Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, CA. Though we'd been told both shows were being recorded, I don't recall the three of us really paying much attention. I think we were all distracted by the fact of it being our last appearance as a trio. Looking back, I also suspect the production crew - led by our indefatigable tour-manager/engineer Greg Anderson - might have soft-pedaled the fact that a recording was being made. Good call, Greg. Best keep things loose.

There was nothing about the lead-up to the show that was different from any other - no special rehearsals or sound-check. We were just happy to be back in Berkeley, and back at the Freight, a place that feels like a home away from home for so many performers and audiences. There were friends and family in attendance. Both shows were sold out. The energy was fabulous. We ordered take-out between shows. A kind person left some really good chocolate backstage (thank you!). The folks at the venue were as lovely, laid-back, and professional as always.

Two years later, everything changed. The simple, unremarkable act of people gathering in a room became impossible. No need to elaborate. But what once might have been taken for granted - humans being together, sharing an experience in real time, side-by-side, in the flesh - became an artifact of a former world.

There are so many people suffering now. One doesn't know where to begin to address the need. It's overwhelming. So it felt like a blessing to find out about the good work of Live Music Society. Suddenly, there it was again: community. Their focus is precisely the cultural niche we (as individuals and as a group) have worked in and lived in for so long. We know the folks at LMS. We've played at many of the venues they support. We know the people who work in these places. They have been devastated. The Freight is an oasis. But it's not the only one. LMS is on the case.

We hope you enjoy this recording. Please contribute as generously as you're able. All proceeds will go to LMS.

Finally, we hope you recognize yourselves and each other as part of this community. Don't just listen to the music. Listen to the audience. They are you.

Richard"
